A step back in the right direction, All Time Low's album seems to be a charming mix of the previous albums So Wrong, It's Right and Nothing Personal. The album contain hints of the older, more punk All Time Low while still maintaining a refreshing change which will lead its fans wanting more.
These are my thoughts while listening to the album.
Heroes
This song would have fit it perfectly with So Wrong, It's Right. Older fans of the band will appreciate the more raw guitar rifts and the fast paced beat of the song. A little old fashioned yelling in the chorus make this song a fitting opening to an album that exceeded my expectations.
That Girl
A mellow, beachy sounding beginning fades into a pop song which will be a hit for the summer crowds, simply because it has that summery feel. The lyrics are somewhat conventional, but catchy. This song is guaranteed to be stuck in your head all summer long.
Daydream Away
Even more mellow than the previous song, this acoustic song is not going to make or break the album, rather, it is the sort of song that one can only enjoy if they are a truly dedicated fan. Oh, and one has to enjoy the acoustic sound also. Otherwise this song will be a letdown. But there has to be one or two songs like this on an album. In So Wrong, It's Right, think of the song "Remembering Sunday", but not as lyrically inspiring.
No Idea
There are synthesizers at the beginning which lead it to seem similar to the previous two songs. But those fade into the stronger guitar rifts. Still, not as lyrically strong as previous albums, but okay. This was definitely not one of the best songs on the album.
Return the Favor
This song was slightly deceiving, because every time it seemed to climb towards an intense chorus, it would fall back down to slightly higher point than before the build. But by the end it had reached an intense, fast paced song. The guitar work builds a beautiful progression which takes my negative first impression of this song and moves up its ranking in the album.
Under the Paper Moon
The beginning of this song is reminiscent of a 30 Seconds to Mars song (link here to their page). Alex Gaskarth said that this is on of his favorite songs off the album. They have begun playing this song in concert even before the release of the album. The song is something pretty similar to the songs on the album Nothing Personal. But it is generally a good song.
Just the Way I'm Not
This will please most older fans of All Time Low while continuing to round in new fans. It has a very catchy chorus and again, a tune that will stick in one's head.
Time-Bomb
A filler song in my opinion, bu decent. Has better lyrics than other songs on the album, but still generally mediocre. It is a very cute song though, very relatable. People will enjoy this, because it compliments the album as a whole.
Guts
Classic All Time Low song. It has a very punk feel, like their first studio records. I thoroughly enjoy this song, more so than others. It is ranked up there with Heroes on this album
Forget About It
Fairly strong song. Enjoyable and creative lyrics. Holds the characteristic of the guitars being far more prevalent than in the last album. The spoken words in the middle of the song are comic relief and wholly characteristic of the bands sense of humor. Solid song overall.
I Feel Like Dancin'
This song makes me cringe. Although it is supposed to be a joke.... it reminds me of the direction that Nothing Personal was heading. But I must admit that the song grows on me every time I hear it. The lyrics are intentionally inane, but the tune has that catchy pop feel. It gets stuck in my head, much to my chagrin.
Do You Want Me (Dead)
Good, creative lyrics and a solid tune. The guitar work leaves nothing to be desired. Leaves the listener feeling pretty good. The one thing I can't get out of my head is a hint of the tune of Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Obviously much better..... but it's still there... :-P
Overall the album exceeded my expectations. In all seriousness, that wasn't hard to do.... they were pretty low to begin with. But the album far exceeded them. It recaptured the sort of music that brought in its original fans while keeping its newer ones entertained. I'd give the album an 8 out of 10.
